Even if all you know so far about whales is that they are big, blue, and spouting, and corsets were made from their whiskers, you need to visit new whalee watchingmuseum. It will be something truly incredible: a building made of glass and stone, inscribed in the harsh Scandinavian nature.
The museum resembles a sea giant rising from the depths of the earth: from the stone roof you can see the stormy sea, and through the glass panel of the main hall you can enjoy the view with a glass of cocoa with marshmallows. In good weather, you can go to the glass gallery outside the building.
The roof of the museum will be carved out of stone so that over time it will be covered with lichens, and it will fit better into the landscape.
The place for the future museum was not chosen by chance: the migration route of the largest mammals passes nearby and an incredible view opens from the roof. “From Andenes, the bestwhale watchingspot can be reached in about an hour by boat. There is an underwater canyon stretching inland, Blake Canyon, and it is a feeding ground for male sperm whales, whofeed hereall yearr. Andenes isoneof the fewplaces inthe orld where you can watch whales all year round,” says Camilla Ilmoni, a member of the museum’s team, in an interview with Bored Panda.
In coastal waters, you can see killer whales, humpback whaless, pilotwhales and dolphins. Moreover, killer whales sometimes swim so close that they can be seen from the roof of the museum. True, for the sake of the whales, you will have to go on a “safari”. Of course, on modern “safaris” hunting occurs only from a photo gun, so the animals have nothing to fear.
Work on the museum was suspended for some time – a burial place of the ancient Vikings, “Farmer Mound”, was discovered nearby. It turned out to be larger than the researchers thought, and made historians doubt that a museum could be built nearby. But after long discussions, the Norwegians decided that the mound would not suffer, but, on the contrary, would attract new tourists. And those who want to watch the whales will be able to learn something new about these lands. So in three years the museum should open its doors.
