Matthew Perry had a great time outing with a friend at a well-known Los Angeles cafe just one week before to his untimely demise.

The 54-year-old actor was last seen in public on October 21st, when he left The Apple Pan holding a drink. He passed away on Saturday after what appeared to be a drowning. Perry had on a gray T-shirt and dark jeans, while his eating partner was carrying a takeout bag.

A restaurant insider tells PEOPLE about the Friends star’s prior visit to The Apple Pan—a renowned spot frequented by celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio—that “he was a good guy, very nice.”
The reason behind Perry’s understated manner is revealed: “It was a busy day, but people weren’t really looking at him.”

In a statement made exclusively to PEOPLE, the star’s family expressed their sorrow over the news of his passing.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother,” the family stated. “As a friend and performer, Matthew brightened the world with so much happiness. He loved you all so dearly, and we are grateful for the incredible show of love.”
According to TMZ, Perry was discovered dead at his Los Angeles area home. Although no drugs were discovered there and no signs of foul play were suspected, first responders had been summoned to the residence for a cardiac arrest.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department subsequently told PEOPLE that, while the identity of the dead could not be confirmed, officers responded to a report at Perry’s house regarding the death of a male in his 50s.
Warner Bros. TV, the company that produced Friends, released a statement saying, “We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry.”

Matthew was a tremendously talented actor who left a lasting legacy within the Warner Bros. Television Group. His legacy will endure in the hearts of countless people, and his comedic brilliance was felt on a global scale,” the statement said. “This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”
Perry posted a farewell picture of himself in a hot tub on Instagram on Monday, writing, “Oh, so warm water flowing around makes you feel good? Call me Mattman.

In recent days, he has gone as “Mattman” while posting on social media, frequently including allusions to and images of Batman.

Regarding his “Mattman” posts, which were inspired by a concept Perry had been working on for a while, a source told PEOPLE that “he was having fun.”
According to the informant, Perry had also recently moved into his new house after remodeling it and had signed on to star in a new drama film called Unworthy, which had been put on hold because of the strike.

“He was exceedingly content,” the insider said.
