“I’ve had losses.”
For the first time, Rachel Bilson is discussing her experience with miscarriage. The actress disclosed on Monday’s Broad Ideas podcast episode that she had experienced several miscarriages before to the birth of her daughter Briar Rose in 2014.
“It’s one of the biggest things I talk about with pregnancy and having babies. I’ve had miscarriages so I’ve had losses,” Bilson continued, saying that she “never carried” the children for very long and that “they were early on.”
After talking about the subject with her co-host Olivia Allen and their guest, She Was Born: Words on Loss and Liberation author Libby Weintraub, the actress went on to say that she felt compelled to “roll with the punches” throughout her pregnancy because of how swiftly things can change.
“With birth, I even remember going into [it saying], ‘I’m open to whatever,’” said she. “What plans can you make when it’s really not up to you? I always knew I was going to go to a hospital and would not try a home birth.”
Eventually, in October 2014, Rachel and her ex-husband Hayden Christensen welcomed their daughter Briar, who is currently eight years old. After dating for ten years, the pair decided to end their relationship in 2017.
Even though Bilson keeps her kid out of the spotlight, she did discuss parenting in a 2019 interview with SheKnows, saying that having a daughter has given her life “purpose.”
“You just feel like — you really are living a life with a purpose,” stated Bilson at the time. “Setting an example for her is the most important. So, in that, it’s like every move you make you know is being watched, so you have to consider things a little more carefully.”
